Dr Agness Chisanga Tembo, PhD, RN | Founder & President, BAANA
Dr Agness Tembo is an award?winning critical care nurse, academic, and community leader dedicated to advancing equity, excellence, and culturally safe nursing practice in Australia. She is a Lecturer/Program Coordinator at the University of Sydney, where she coordinates postgraduate intensive care nursing program
Her research focuses on racism in nursing, epistemic justice, and improving outcomes for critically ill patients and their families. Dr Tembo has published widely in leading journals, served as Guest Editor for international nursing special issue, and contributes to shaping nursing discourse on antiracism and ethical leadership.
Dr Tembo is the Founder and President of the Black African Australian Nurses Association (BAANA), where she champions representation, professional advancement, and solidarity among Black African nurses across Australia. She is also the President of the Hunter African Communities Council and the founder of El Roi Healthcare, providing essential community?based nursing and allied health services across NSW.
Passionate about uplifting African communities and building pathways for emerging leaders, Dr Tembo continues to foster excellence, mentorship, and a strong, united African nursing voice.
