Meet Monicah – BAANA Secretary

Nursing Student | Kenya → Australia | Advocate for Excellence and Cultural Safety

We are delighted to welcome Monicah as the new Secretary of the Black African Australian Nurses Association (BAANA). Originally from Kenya, Monicah brings a powerful combination of cultural insight, academic dedication, and community passion to her role.

Currently studying Nursing at the University of Newcastle, Monicah is known for her thoroughness, reliability, and exceptional organisational skill. Her academic journey is complemented by hands-on experience working in disability support with El Roi Healthcare, giving her a strong understanding of person-centred care and the realities of clinical work in Australia.

Monicah is driven by a deep commitment to:

advocating for African nurses,

supporting culturally safe practice, and

strengthening representation and visibility within the Australian healthcare system.

Her professionalism, attention to detail, and calm, respectful communication style make her an invaluable addition to the BAANA leadership team. As Secretary, she will play a key role in coordinating BAANA’s governance, supporting committee operations, facilitating communication, and helping build a strong national network for African Australian nurses.

Monicah joins the Black African Australian Nurses Association (BAANA) as Secretary, bringing a strong blend of academic excellence, community commitment, and organisational skill. Originally from Kenya, she is currently completing her nursing degree at the University of Newcastle while working in disability support with El Roi Healthcare.

Known for her thoroughness, professionalism, and attention to detail, Monicah is passionate about promoting culturally safe care and strengthening pathways for African nurses within the Australian healthcare system. Her lived experience as a migrant nursing student gives her a grounded and insightful perspective on the challenges and opportunities facing African Australian clinicians.

In her role as Secretary, Monicah oversees BAANA’s governance documentation, communications, and administrative coordination, ensuring smooth operations and effective engagement across the association.

She embodies BAANA’s values of excellence, integrity, Ubuntu, and community empowerment, and we are proud to have her as part of our leadership team.
